Decolonise Mindsets
Decolonising mindsets: Strengthening engagement for an inclusive and transformative culture of remembrance in Europe
Colonialism is not a thing of the past! For people in Europe who are affected by racism, this is a completely obvious truth. They advocate for a critical reappraisal of the colonial era and for overcoming neo-colonial patterns of thought and structures. Unfortunately, they are currently hardly heard by the majority of the population. This project wants to change that! In three steps, it aims to contribute to the decolonization of mindsets.
In the first step, members of migrant and diaspora communities and activists will uncover colonial traces in Portugal, Spain, and Germany. Through exhibitions, city tours, and interactive formats like quiz nights, the project makes racism and colonial legacies visible in everyday life, helping to deconstruct stereotypes and normalized inequalities. In the second step, they will engage in discussions with politicians and decision-makers in business about how racism and neo-colonialism should be addressed. Finally, in the third step, through European exchange and conversations with EU decision-makers, the project will create contributions to a post-colonial European culture of remembrance and contemporary awareness by connecting experiences from different countries. The vision is a shared European culture of remembrance in which the racist legacy of colonialism is exposed and the concept of decolonisation provides actionable insights into Europe's societies and its involvement in the world.
A crucial element throughout is ensuring that the pioneers of decolonization enter into dialogue with students, school pupils, and older people from Generations X and Y, who so far have engaged little with the legacies of colonialism. This will both train and empower migrants and activists, while also raising awareness among parts of the population that have so far been less familiar with
colonialism. In this way, a foundation is laid for an inclusive and depolarized culture of remembrance.
