Rui Carvalho

Biography

Sociologist (PhD, Brown University) and geographer (BSc, NOVA University of Lisbon). My research focuses on issues of: community and urban development, globalization and transnationalism, international migration, racial and ethnic minorities, research methods, and social theory. My doctoral dissertation project examined how racial (and other) inequalities influence the international migration aspirations and capabilities of Brazilians. Alongside continuing this line of research, my current projects focus on attitudes towards immigrants and immigration, as well as towards ecological crises, in the European context. Some of this work is being developed in the scope of the project CO3 (Centre for Social Studies, University of Coimbra). In line with the areas of research listed above, my pedagogical interests and experience comprise topics such as: migration and development, ethnic and racial inequalities, urban studies, and theories and methods of social research. I have often resorted to the use of community and arts (Hip Hop) based pedagogical tools in these teaching (and learning) experiences.
