Bio note

Boaventura de Sousa Santos  was born in Coimbra and is acknowledged wordly for his vast work as a social scientist and by his public interventions while an intelectual activist. Even though he is lesser known in Portugal for his literary work, he has authored around two dozen poetry books. 

His poetry writing has always existed side-by-side with the work of the public scholar and thinker, his debut book being Antologia de poesia universitária (Lisbon: Portugália, 1962), followed by O rosto quotidiano (Coimbra: Almedina, 1966), Têmpera (Coimbra: Centelha, 1980), Madison e outros lugares (Porto: Afrontamento, 1989), Viagem ao centro da pele (Porto: Afrontamento, 1995), Escrita INKZ – Anti-manifesto para uma arte incapaz (Rio de Janeiro: Aeroplano, 2004. Also published in Portugal by Edições Afrontamento, in 2007), Janela presa no andaime (Belo Horizonte: Scriptum, 2009); Rap global (Rio de Janeiro: Aeroplano, 2010), Falta de ar em plena estação (São Paulo: Escrituras Editora, 2012), Pomada em pó. He is Director Emeritus of the Center for Social Studies, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Coimbra (Portugal), and Distinguished Legal Scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, author and editor of more than 60 books in several languagues and coordinator of numerous research projects. He has taught in several universities in Europe, Americas, Africa and Asia. Among his awards and prizes are the Socrates Award, by the Faculty of Law of the University of the Andes (2012); Mexican Prize for Science and Technology 2010; Gulbenkian Science Award (1996); Portuguese Pen Club Award, Essay (1994); Harry J. Kalven Jr. Prize, by the Law and Society Association.
