Reading Session
Witty Misfortune
November 18, 2025, 18h00
Sala de S. Pedro, General Library of the University of Coimbra
Being witty is, above all, knowing how to see the world with humour, and this is perhaps one of the most sophisticated forms of lucidity. At a time when extremes dominate public discourse, humour emerges as an antidote to fanaticism and rigidity. It does not ridicule, but displaces; it does not destroy, but disarms. Seeing the world with humour and irony is recognising the complexity of things without always having to choose sides; it is realising that laughter can contain more truth than shouting. In reading, this ironic attitude is liberating. It allows us to move between ideas, question certainties, and find nuances. A humorous text is not superficial: it is one that, between laughter and bewilderment, invites reflection.
In a time of polarisation and heated certainties, humour gives us back the pleasure of thinking lightly, reminding us that understanding the world may depend less on being right and more on knowing how to laugh intelligently.
