Seminar | Masculinities under Debate
Violence and Gender in Sporting Contexts
January 21, 2026, 15h00 (GMT)
Online event
This talk introduces the Observatório Nacional da Violência contra Atletas (ObNVA) [National Observatory on Violence against Athletes], an online platform created to collect and analyse, anonymously and confidentially, experiences or witnessed incidents of violence against athletes. The project aims to give a voice to victims, former victims, and anyone who has witnessed situations perceived as violent; refer cases to the competent authorities; produce scientific knowledge; and contribute to effective policies for preventing and combating violence in sport. This seminar addresses the types and impacts of violence (physical, psychological, sexual, and social), as well as its frequency in various sports, the profile of (former) victims and perpetrators. It also analyses the power relations between athletes, coaches and parents, the cultural normalisation of abusive behaviour and gender differences in experiences of victimisation.
The second part will focus on representations of sexual violence in youth and high-performance sport.
