III LGBTQI+ History Month Exhibition

The only choice I made was to be happy.

February 3 to 28, 2025

North/South Library entrance, CES | Alta

The main goal of this event is to commemorate LGBTQI+ History Month throughout February with an exhibition hosted at BN|S. This exhibition is the result of collaboration between the REMEMBER and TRACE projects, the Research Group on Sexualities (GPS-CES), and the Biblioteca Norte|Sul (BN|S).

This year, the exhibition places special emphasis on LGBTQI+ history through the lens of queer individuals aged 60 and over. The theme will be highlighted by showcasing the trailer for the documentary “Outlasting - Living Archives of Older Queers”, currently being produced as part of the TRACE project. The trailer can be accessed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpQysXagmFs. To complement the trailer, the TRACE project will provide four reports summarising the legal advancements in LGBTQI+ rights across countries such as Malta, Slovenia, Italy, and Greece.

As expected, the display of books from the BN|S collection related to the theme will also be one of the highlights of this exhibition. In addition, photographic records of the 1st Vintage Bloc of the Lisbon Pride March 2024 will be included, alongside some of the materials that adorned this moment of celebration and protest, such as the banner that led the Vintage Bloc and some of the posters carried by participants.

Finally, the annual launch of the FATOR Q Bulletin will take place [date to be announced soon], a publication by GPS that this year also features a collaboration with BN|S.

This exhibition explores stories and images that are often marginalised in research and activism, particularly in the context of who ages hand in hand with sexual and gender diversity.
