The Gender Workshop's Feminist Talks aim to showcase the lives and work of people from the most diverse areas of activity, with a focus on Gender equality and women's issues
This talk will feature guest Anabela Mota Ribeiro, journalist and author, in dialogue with Inês Amaral (FLUC/CES) on women in journalism, media, and literature.
Bio notes
Anabela Mota Ribeiro was born in 1971 in Trás-os-Montes. She lives and works in Lisbon. Holds a BA and a MA in Philosophy from Universidade Nova de Lisboa. During her PhD, she continued the study of Brazilian author Machado de Assis. Was visiting research fellow at Brown University in 2019. Published the following books: O Sonho de um Curioso (2003), Este Ser e não Ser - Cinco Conversas com Maria de Sousa (2016), Paula Rego por Paula Rego (2016), A Flor Amarela - Ímpeto e Melancolia em Machado de Assis (2017), Por Saramago (2018) e Os Filhos da Madrugada (2021 e 2022) e O Quarto do Bebé (novel, 2023).
A freelance journalist, she has collaborated with various newspapers and magazines and worked in radio. She is the author and host of tv shows, most recently Os Filhos da Madrugada (2021, 2022, 2024 and 2025, RTP3) and Seis Propostas para este Milénio (2023, RTP3).
As a cultural programmer, she collaborates with leading institutions. Among other projects, she curated the Porto Book Fair with José Eduardo Agualusa in 2017, 2018 and 2020, and, with André e. Teodósio, the FeLiCidade festival at the CCB in 2024.
She conceived and led the series Um Filme Falado at the Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira in Serralves (2022, 2023, 2024, 2025).

Inês Amaral is an Associate Professor in the Communication Section of the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Information (DFCI) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. She serves as a department deputy director of the DFCI and coordinator of the Communication Section of the DFCI. PhD in Communication Sciences (Interactive Media) at the University of Minho. She is a researcher at the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra (Research Group Europe and the Global South: Heritages and Dialogues). She is a member of the research team at Observatório Masculinidades.pt. She is a member of the CES Ethics Committee and the Editorial Board of the Revista Crítica de Ciências Sociais. Inês is a collaborating researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre of the University of Minho.
She has developed research on sociabilities in digital social networks, participation and social media, feminist media studies, masculinities, gender and media, media and digital literacy, technologies and active ageing, audiences and media consumption in the digital age, and disinformation.
