Seminar
Cosmoecology of an Amazonian liana
November 4, 2025, 15h00 (GMT)
Online event
Lianas are woody climbing plants that play a fundamental role in Amazonian ecology, creating suspended bridges between tree canopies. In this seminar, we narrate the relationships between humans and some of their liana companions, focusing on yoco (Paullinia yoco), a liana of the Sapindaceae family, rich in caffeine and endemic to the Pleistocene refuge of Napo. Around yoco, cosmoecological kinships are woven with other lianas, such as ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi) and tamshi (Heteropsis sp., Thoracocarpus sp.), which also intertwine humans with birds and contribute to defining people's character.
