Carolina Maria de Jesus - an interpreter's ambivalences of Brazil's modernity in non-modernity

Overview
In Brazil, the social markers of differences leverage current bipartisan discussions about the literary performance of black authors in countries that have gone through colonisation processes. The historical absence of a context of representativeness and proportionality of nonwhite voices in academic and literary spaces has sparked a heated debate about the craft of writing, based on the pyramid of racial and gender oppression and the overcoming process of broken identities. In this light, the work and trajectory of the black, poor and favelada author, that became worldwide known in the 1960´s, and who even had her book "Quarto de despejo: diário de uma favelada " forbidden by Salazar in Portugal. There are many Carolinas de Jesus in Brazil, materialized in the presence of several black, indigenous or mestizo women facing the daily challenges of re-existing in a constant movement of modernity in non-modernity.
Bio note
Raffaella Fernandez holds a doctorate in Theory and History of Literature (2015) at IEL-UNICAMP, with PhD internship at the Institute of Texts et Manuscrits Modernes (ITEM/CNRS) at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris (Capes-PDSE / 2013) on literary aspects scattered in the unpublished manuscripts of Carolina Maria de Jesus. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate Programme in Literature Science at UFRJ (PNPD/Capes) and in the Advanced Programme of Contemporary Culture (PACC-UFRJ), under the supervision of Profa. Dr. Heloísa Buarque de Hollanda. She is an integrated researcher at CLEPUL (Centre for Literature and Lusophone and European Cultures of the Faculty of Arts) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon (2014).
In 2018, she published the book A poética de resíduos de Carolina Maria de Jesus and organized the book Meu sonho é escrever dream is to write' by Carolina Maria de Jesus and also organized the book Onde estaes felicidade? By Carolina Maria de Jesus in 2014.
