Overview

Brazil experienced a positive cycle of social public policies, starting with democratisation and the 1988 Constitution, which contributed to the reduction of poverty and the beginning of the fall of inequality. The advances of social policies in the Lula and Dilma Governments can be clearly demonstrated. However, in the last two years, this process, which revealed to be on the rise and in consolidation, has proved fragile and easily reversed.

This seminar intends to analyse this trajectory pointing out the advances and challenges to be faced, especially after the result of the last elections  - the debate between the advance of democracy and the advance of the welfare state seems urgent.

This seminar, organised by Leonardo Avritzer and Maria Paula Meneses, will focus on public policies, with the participation of Unaí Tupinambás and Adriana Aranhas, both from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. After the debate there will be a broad discussion on the crisis of democracy in Brazil.
