Pedro Góis distinguished with the 2nd Prize of the 2020 edition of the Res Publica Award

Pedro Góis, professor at the Faculty of Economics and the Centre for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra, was distinguished with the 2nd Prize of the 2020 edition of the Res Publica Award for his essay "The erosion of population nationalism in the 21st century: contemporary Portugal as an example of a modern demographic approach".

For the current edition, the Res Publica Award jury included Edite Estrela (President of the Founders' Council), José António Vieira da Silva (Executive Director), Wanda Guimarães, Elza Pais and Rui Pena Pires.

Bestowed by the Res Publica Foundation, this award had the "demographic challenge" as its underlying theme. The essays in the competition could focus on one of the following four sub-themes: The demographic problem: impacts and challenges; The role of public policies in promoting birth rates; Gender equality policies, work organization and conciliation between private and professional life in the context of the demographic challenge; The importance of international migrations in the context of the demographic challenge.

In this edition, the Res Publica Award had a pecuniary value of € 2.500, € 1.500 and € 1.000, to be attributed to the author or authors of the winning essays of the first, second and third prizes, respectively.

Pedro Góis is co-coordinator of a study on “Portuguese emigrants' expectations of return”, which brings together the University of Coimbra and the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria.
