Submission Guidelines
I. General info
1. Oficina do CES is a publication of the Centre for Social Studies of the University of Coimbra, dedicated to working papers in electronic format. It disseminates original texts, usually from ongoing projects, authored by affiliated researchers, junior researchers, PhD students at CES, students from postgraduate programs of University of Coimbra faculties partnered with CES, postdoctoral researchers at CES, or other invited researchers.
2. The Coordinator of Oficina do CES reserves the right to accept or decline submitted manuscripts and is committed to informing the author of the decision taken, along with the underlying rationale. Accepted texts will undergo a scientific review and, if necessary, the author will be required to make the changes recommended by the publication’s Coordinator.
II. Recommendations to the authors
1. All documents must be presented in the final version, which must not exceed the 50,000 characters with spaces (including notes and references).
2. Texts must always be accompanied by a summary, which should not exceed 800 characters with spaces, and by five keywords.
3. Texts must be sent in Word format by email to oficina@ces.uc.pt
4. Manuscripts must be presented in Times New Roman font, size 12, without extra spaces between paragraphs, without headers or any special formatting.
III. Preparation of the text
1. Direct quotations, which are literal transcriptions of the cited text, may be presented in the original foreign language of the work or in translation. If translations are presented, these are under the responsibility of manuscript's author.
2. Brief citations (1-3 lines) should appear within the body of the text between quotation marks.
3. Longer citations (4 lines or more) should be indented and formatted in a smaller font size than the text without quotation marks.
4. The epigraph, if any, should be as short as possible.
5. Interpolations should be enclosed in square brackets [ ].
6. Omissions are indicated by 3-point ellipsis within square brackets [...].
7. The titles of cited works should be in italics, in the case of books, newspapers and journals or between quotation marks, in the case of articles.
8. Notes should appear as footnotes and numbered sequentially.
9. The number which refers to the note should appear superscript after the punctuation mark. Example: “as can easily be proved.3”
IV. References
Starting from 2024, Oficina do CES follows the APA (7th edition) citation guidelines. Several examples of how to apply these guidelines can be found at https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references/examples. It is recommended that authors use bibliographic management tools when writing their texts.
1. In-text references will always be placed in parentheses, using the abbreviated form of the author’s last name, publication date, and, if applicable, page number.
Examples:
A single author: (Sá, 1991, pp. 7–9)
Two authors: (Sampaio & Gameiro, 1985)
Three or more authors: (Silva et al., 1989)
Multiple works by the same author published in the same year: (Fine, 2017a, 2017b)
Multiple works by different authors must be arranged in alphabetical order by surname: (Cardon, 2012; Uski & Lampinen, 2016; Wan et al., 2015)
Indirect citation: (as cited in Ferreira, 1992, p. 217)
2. The complete list of works cited in the text (and only these) should be included at the end, with the title “References”, alphabetically ordered by the authors’ last name. The authors’ names will be separated by commas, and before the last one, the symbol “&” should be added. If it is a translation, the name of the translator and the original year of publication must be included. The place of publication is not to be included in the references, but the publisher must always be indicated. When referencing journal articles or book chapters, the page range of the cited text must always be provided. DOI should be presented in the following format: https://doi.org/xxxxxxx.
References should strictly follow the model provided in the examples below.
